South Carolina Sees $5.9 Billion in Projects Under Construction

The projects vary widely in type, including those involving electric vehicle (EV) batteries, refrigerated warehousing and semiconductor manufacturing. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry, with more than $3.35 billion worth of projects underway, leads the state in terms of the overall value of projects.

One of South Carolina's largest projects currently under construction is Envision-AESC LLC's (Smyrna, Tennessee) grassroot EV battery plant in Florence, construction of which recently kicked off. The project entails constructing a 1.5 million-square-foot facility with supporting equipment and systems to manufacture 30 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year. Other automotive-related projects in the state include Robert Bosch GmbH's (Gerlingen, Germany) expansion of its manufacturing facility in Charleston to allow for a new electric motor production line. According to a company website, the Charleston plant is Bosch's biggest U.S. facility. It currently manufactures fuel injectors and braking systems. South Carolina has in the past been a strong spot for the U.S. textiles sector, which has seen somewhat of a reemergence in the state over the past several years. Shaw Industries Group Incorporated (Dalton, Georgia) is expanding one of its carpet yarn plants in the state, located in Aiken, by constructing a 530,800-square-foot building addition with supporting systems to enable the company to help meet current and future demand for its high-performance carpet products. General contractor Schaerer Contracting Company Incorporated (Chattanooga, Tennessee) kicked off construction earlier this year and is expected to wrap up the project by the end of 2024. The U.S. government has passed legislation encouraging the manufacture of semiconductors in the U.S., and Pallidus Incorporated (Albany, New York) is capitalizing on this by renovating a currently unoccupied 300,000-square-foot building in Rock Hill, South Carolina, for semiconductor manufacturing. The project is expected to be completed later this year, when it will begin manufacturing next-generation silicon carbide wafers for use in EVs, telecommunications and more. Refrigerated warehousing and distribution represents one of the strongest spending sectors in the Food & Beverage Industry, and Walmart Incorporated (NYSE:WMT) (Bentonville, Arkansas) is keeping up with this trend by constructing a grassroot distribution center for refrigerated and frozen foods in Lyman, South Carolina. Renewable energy also is making its way into the state, primarily in the form of solar power. One such project is Pine Gate Renewables LLC's (Asheville, North Carolina) grassroot Gunsight photovoltaic solar farm, construction of which began last year. The solar farm will use approximately 300,000 Jinko solar panels to provide nameplate generation of 75 megawatts.
