U.S. EV Adoption

The U.S. auto market will eventually embrace electric vehicles (EVs), Stellantis Chief Executive Officer Antonio Filosa said on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters.

At a media event on the sidelines of the Paris motor show, Filosa said EVs accounted for 7% of all U.S. automotive sales this year--unchanged from five years ago.

Industrial Info Resources data show 68 active EV-related projects in the U.S. automotive sector worth $73.5 billion--which is currently buoyed by battery manufacturing--around $60 billion of which is under construction. Readers can view more information on the activity in the Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Plant and Project databases--which offer construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in detailed project reports and related plant profiles.

Attachment "It has been a bubble driven by regulation," he said. But then, when the administration has decided to deregulate, the consumers have been preferring other powertrains."

Despite the slow adoption, he said he "truly" believes it will eventually come. "The level of magnitude and the speed of transition is going to be lower for sure than other regions."

Earlier this year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported more than 20 million electric and hybrid vehicles were sold around the world in 2025, with China accounting for over 50% of those sales, followed by Europe. In the U.S., EV sales remained stable at roughly 10% of car sales, although the cancellation of EV tax credits coincided with a drop in sales at the end of the year. Some trends shaping the current U.S. automotive landscape include major automakers reshoring production, shifting to hybrids, and battery manufacturing. The latter trend partly involves shifting battery production to support energy storage. U.S. Projects

Tesla is investing to add approximately 4 million square feet at its Gigafactory site in Sparks, Nevada, a portion of which has entailed a dedicated factory for its electric Tesla Semi Truck (Gigafactory 1) that has begun high-volume production, and a separate battery plant under construction to further support the production. View the project report.

General Motors is in the process of expanding its Spring Hill Manufacturing (Vehicle Assembly) Plant in Tennessee to increase production capacity of the electric Cadillac Lyric and VISTIQ sport utility vehicles (SUVs), alongside the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer and other models, with production beginning next year.

Meanwhile, Toyota is upgrading its Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) site in Georgetown, Kentucky, by adding equipment in order to build a new three-row electric SUV. Readers can view the GM and Toyota project reports.

Industrial Info Resources is tracking $55 billion worth of active and planned projects attributed to battery manufacturing in the U.S. automotive sector, and readers can view a full list here. This includes a battery joint venture (L-H Battery Company) between Honda and LG Energy Solution that is expanding manufacturing space in Jeffersonville, Ohio, to supply lithium-ion batteries exclusively to Honda facilities in North America and to power Honda and Acura EV models. Phase II and Phase III expansions are underway, while subsequent expansions could follow.

Key Takeaways
  • $73.5 billion: Total investment value of active EV-related projects in the U.S. automotive sector, with around $60 billion under construction.
  • Much of the activity is attributed to battery manufacturing, not EV assembly.
  • EV-related construction involves major automakers, and battery manufacturers such as LG Energy Solution.
