Tesla's plant in Lathrop, California, which opened in 2022, is one of the largest utility-scale energy storage battery-manufacturing plants in North America--with an annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapack batteries, equal to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy storage. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Industrial Manufacturing Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Plant Database can read more information on the Lathrop plant and a nearby plant that produces the battery packs needed to enclose the batteries.
In the company's third-quarter earnings conference call last month, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said the Lathrop plant reached 200 Megapacks per week, which equates to the annual 40-GWh run rate.
Tesla supplies projects featuring both standalone Megapack BESS units as well as those that are co-located with solar plants, providing energy when the sun isn't shining or during times of peak demand.
This includes projects in California, which leads the U.S. in installed utility-scale energy storage capacity. Among the projects underway in The Golden State set to utilize the Megapack batteries are two standalone efforts from Arevon (also known as CD Arevon USA Incorporated): the 200-MW Tanager and 188-MW Cormorant battery energy storage systems. Also underway is construction of the Eland 2 BESS, to be colocated at Arevon's related solar plant. All three projects are expected to wrap up by mid-2026.
Subscribers to the GMI Power Project Database can read detailed reports on the Tanager, Cormorant and Eland 2 projects.
Also underway is the construction of two battery energy storage systems near Albuquerque, New Mexico, that are co-located at solar plants attributed to Enlight Renewable Energy Limited (NASDAQ:ENLT) (Rosh Haayin, Israel). Enlight's Atrisco solar-plus-storage project, which is expected to be operational by the end of the year, is designed to provide 1.2 GWh of battery storage, while the adjacent Quail Ranch solar-plus-storage project is expected to be operational in 2025 and provide up to 400 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage. Subscribers can read more about the Atrisco and Quail Ranch projects.
In Texas, which trails only California among all U.S. states for installed energy storage capacity, Eolian Energy (Burlingame, California) is wrapping up its 50-MW, standalone Padua BESS in San Antonio, and proposed 150-MW and 200-MW BESS units are expected to be online in 2026. Click here for the project reports. Eolian is a portfolio company of Global Infrastructure Partners (New York, New York).
Elsewhere under construction in the U.S. and designed to utilize Tesla's Megapack units is another project from a unit of Global Infrastructure Partners: the standalone, 250-MW/500-MWh Medway BESS project in Massachusetts. Expected to wrap up next year, the project would support the Independent System Operator of New England electric grid. Click here to read more project information.
In Arizona, Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is building out a BESS addition at its Hashknife Solar plant under construction in Joseph City, both of which are expected to wrap up in 2026. Subscribers can read more information on the BESS and solar projects.
