TotalEnergies kicked off initial work on the Myrtle solar farm in Brazoria County, Texas, in 2022, and work on an additional segment began earlier this year. Together, the solar portions account for 380 megawatts (MW) of generation. Work on the BESS portion of the facility also started this year and was recently completed, allowing the entire facility to begin operations. About 70% of the Myrtle solar farm's power has been allocated to TotalEnergies' operations along the Gulf Coast. Specifically, TotalEnergies' "Go Green" initiative aims to cover the power needs and curtail Scope 1 and 2 emissions from the company's sites in La Porte and Port Arthur in Texas and Carville, Louisiana. The remaining 30% of the plant's power has been allocated in a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to Kilroy Realty Corporation (NYSE:KRC) (Los Angeles, California).
While the Myrtle project represents one of TotalEnergies' biggest renewable energy projects in the U.S., the company is preparing to deliver an even larger solar facility next year, also located in Texas, in Matagorda County. Work on the 400-MW+ Danish Fields solar facility kicked off in late 2021. Earlier this year, materials manufacturer Saint-Gobain (La Defense, France) signed a PPA for 100 MW of the plant's energy. The Danish Fields facility also will feature more than 150 MW of battery energy storge capacity. The project is expected to be completed early next year. Other large-scale TotalEnergies solar projects planned for Texas include the 110-MW Ophelia facility in Ector County in West Texas, which could break ground late next year, taking an estimated year to complete. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
And TotalEnergies' projects represent only a small portion of solar energy projects underway in Texas, which ranks No. 2 in the nation for installed solar capacity. One of the state's largest solar projects is under construction in Mart, near Waco. Engineering, procurement and construction company Primoris Renewable Energy (Aurora, Colorado) began construction on Hecate Energy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) Roseland solar photovoltaic facility in 2021. Upon completion of the project, which is nearing, the facility will use approximately 669,000 panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide 553 MW. Subscribers can click here for more details.
