Industrial Info Resources is tracking $8.5 billion worth of capital-spending projects across the U.S. and Canada for the production of automotive components, most of which is in the U.S.Major Automakers Lead the Way
According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are $8.5 billion worth of capital-spending projects in the U.S. and Canada for the production of automotive components, with about 80% of the investment in the U.S.The Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database offers key details on these developments in a list of detailed project reports.
Major automakers pace the investment with high-dollar projects.
General Motors leads all companies with $1.9 billion worth of active and planned investment, buoyed by the automaker's largest single investment ($888 million) in an engine plant. Underway at an operational plant in Tonawanda, New York, the project, which kicked off last year, is designed to begin producing a gasoline- and-diesel-powered, sixth-generation small-block V-8 engine to be used in the company's line of full-size trucks and SUV's. First production is expected in 2027.
Another project under development from GM will exclusively support ICE vehicles: a $300 million expansion at a campus in Romulus, Michigan, would boost production capacity of 10-speed transmissions used in full-size trucks and SUVs.
Readers can view the two project reports and plant profiles.
Meanwhile, Stellantis is in the middle of adding an assembly line and equipment at its engine plant in Kokomo, Indiana, to begin production of a new four-cylinder GMET4 EVO gasoline engine by the end of the year. View the project report here.
In October, Stellantis' chief executive officer said the U.S. auto market will eventually embrace EVs, despite slow adoption thus far. For more information, see October 14, 2026, article - Stellantis CEO Expects Eventual U.S. Electric Vehicle Adoption.
Toyota is expanding its operational engines and transmissions plant in Buffalo, West Virginia, specifically to boost production of hybrids. The project is designed to increase assembly of 4-cylinder hybrid-compatible engines and sixth-generation hybrid transaxles. View the project report here.
Toyota earlier this year said it planned to shift some auto production to the U.S. from Mexico--which comes as uncertainty around the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade agreement and ongoing U.S. tariffs are driving automakers to reshore their manufacturing efforts. For more information, see July 10, 2026, article - Toyota: $3.6 Billion to Shift Some Automotive Production to U.S. from Mexico.
North of the border, Ford is investing US$500 million to expand its Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario, which entails new production line machinery and tooling equipment to scale up production of 5.0-liter V8 engines to be used in the automaker's U.S. assembly plants for F-series super-duty trucks and other models. Production could begin in 2029. View the project report here.
"A strong, integrated North American manufacturing system is essential to our competitiveness, and a revised USMCA is critical to fending off the cost and currency advantages enjoyed by imported vehicles from Korea and Japan," Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley said earlier this year in announcing the investment.
Others Jumping In
Also underway is traditional component supplier Autokiniton's expansion of its manufacturing plant in Bellevue, Ohio. It entails adding a 215,000-square-foot building, to increase production of vehicle frames and other products. The plant is a major supplier of the frames of the Ford F-150 lineup, and also serves major automakers such as Toyota, GM and Stellantis. For more information, see the detailed project report.Taiwan-based Minth Group is building out manufacturing space in the U.S. and Canada. This includes investing US$430 million in order to renovate 1 million square feet at the site of a former steel mill in Gadsden, Alabama, to produce plastic and aluminum components for vehicles produced at U.S plants, including those owned by Hyundai and Kia. Also underway is construction on a multi-building manufacturing campus in Windsor, Ontario, focusing on traditional and EV supply chains, producing metal EV battery housing units/trays and lightweight plastic exterior parts such as bumpers and grilles. The two phases of the Canada plant are under construction, while two subsequent phases could follow.

Key Takeaways
- $8.5 billion: Total investment value of active and proposed auto component-manufacturing projects across the U.S. and Canada.
- GM, Toyota and Ford account for about one-third of the total investment value.
