Summary

U.S. industrial megaprojects requiring $1 billion or more in investment are lining up to kick off in 2027.

The Big Picture

Industrial Info Resources data show plans for more than 600 industrial projects each valued at $1 billion or more in investment to kick off in 2027; however, not all of these will move forward as planned due to permitting hangups, equipment supply issues, or any number of other reasons. Narrowing the 600+ results for potential U.S. megaprojects in Industrial Info Resources' Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database shows a gradual dwindling in project count as probability filters are applied.

Weeding out the low-probability projects (0-69% of moving forward as planned) strikes around 130 of these 2027 megaprojects off the list, with most remaining planned projects garnering a medium probability (70-80%) of moving forward as planned. Filtering to U.S. megaprojects with a high probability of starting construction in 2027 (81-99% chance) yields a smaller count of 17 at the moment, although this is subject to change as other projects move forward and cross planning, engineering and permitting milestones.

The 17 high-probability projects set to kick off in the U.S. in 2027 account for about $37.5 billion in total investment and cover a range of industries.

Power

A handful of power megaprojects feature on the list, with the most notable being the construction of one of TerraPower's 345-megawatt (MW) Natrium advanced reactors in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Construction of the sodium-cooled reactor was approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in March of this year, marking the NRC's first approval of a commercial nuclear project since 2018. LNG

Permitting of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects has escalated dramatically under the second Trump administration, following a pause in LNG approvals under former President Joe Biden. Many LNG projects have kicked off or continue to await permitting. An LNG megaproject almost certain to move forward next year is Commonwealth LNG's trains 5 and 6 at its Louisiana plant in Cameron Parish.

Commonwealth had a relatively easy time in permitting the project, with the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) authorizing construction of all six trains at the facility in 2022 and reaffirming the project in 2025. Construction has in theory begun for the entire facility, but Industrial Info Resources data indicate work will begin in earnest on the final two trains toward the end of next year. Other U.S. LNG facilities, such as NextDecade's Rio Grande project in Brownsville, Texas, have been approved on a train-by-train basis, with FERC approving construction of Rio Grande trains 4 and 5 in March this year. Construction already has commenced on one of the Rio Grande trains, with work on the other expected to be underway by the end of this year.

The Commonwealth plant will include six modular production trains, each producing around 1.5 million tons per annum of LNG. Construction of trains 5 and 6 is expected to take around four years to complete, putting both units on track to begin ramping up production by late 2031.

Pharmaceutical & Biotech

Multiple $1 billion-plus pharma projects are currently underway throughout the U.S., led in large part by the unleashing of the GLP-1 drug revolution. (For more on that, see August 27, 2026, article - GLP-1 Drugs Drive Pharma Construction Wave.) Multiple pharma-biotech megaprojects are lined up for next year, including continued multibillion-dollar spending from GLP-1 rock star Eli Lilly & Company. While GLP-1s and other drugs will undoubtedly lead to further spending in 2027, a U.S. life science construction megaproject on the books for next year that has a strong probability of moving forward comes from the New York City Economic Development Corporation, which is heading up the transformation of an entire city block on Manhattan's East Side into a 1.5 million-plus-square-foot education and research hub for multiple pharma-biotech and educational tenants. The SPARC Kips Bay (Science Park and Research Campus) development is expected to be completed in 2031.

Data Centers

As the flagship Stargate Project campus continues to take shape in Abilene, Texas, and Meta Platforms continues with a large investment for Building 2 at its Lebanon, Indiana, campus, another large U.S. data center megaproject in 2027 comes from real estate investment trust Digital Realty Trust (DLR), which is expected to drop an estimated $2.7 billion on initial work at its new campus in Taylorsville, Georgia, early next year. ...And that's just for one building. The entire project could encompass 12 buildings and require investments in excess of $28.7 billion.

Offshore Oil & Gas

BP could kick off its Tiber offshore development, about 300 miles southwest of New Orleans, next year. The project will include construction of a floating production unit capable of processing 80,000 barrels per day of oil and up to 25 million cubic feet of natural gas from an estimated 350 million barrels of oil equivalent of recoverable resources. First oil is targeted for late 2029 or 2030.

Key Takeaways
  • Industrial Info Resources data show more than 600 $1 billion+ industrial construction megaprojects planned to begin construction in 2027, although not all of these will move forward as planned.
  • Key segments in next year's development of U.S. megaprojects include data centers, nuclear power and offshore oil and gas.
