Wind projects dominate the region's planned activity, and among the largest of these is Orsted A/S' (Frederica, Denmark) Plum Creek Windfarm near Winside, Nebraska. The grassroot windfarm will have a generating capacity of approximately 230 megawatts (MW) and will use around 81 wind turbines. Construction on the $379 million project is set to begin by the end of the year and take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Renewable energy company Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is growing its expansive wind footprint by constructing the 200-MW Freeborn Windfarm near Glenville, Minnesota. The facility will use 100 Vestas wind turbines. Construction is set to begin before the end of the year and be completed by the end of 2020. Wanzek Construction Incorporated (West Fargo, North Dakota) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $300 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin) also is expanding its wind holdings by constructing a windfarm in Kossuth County, Iowa. The 152.5-MW windfarm will use 61 General Electric (NYSE:GE) 2.5-MW wind turbines. IEA White Construction (Clinton, Indiana) is providing EPC services. The project is expected to take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Outside of the wind arena, Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is planning a refueling outage for Unit 2 of its Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant in Welch, Minnesota. The 31-day outage is planned to kick off next month and be completed in early November. The unit has a generating capacity of 545 MW. Bartlett Nuclear Incorporated (Plymouth, Massachusetts) is the contractor on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While not seen much these days, fuel oil-fired power stations still exist in limited numbers in the U.S. Nebraska Public Power District (Hallam, Nebraska) will conduct a major overhaul of one of the turbines at its McCook fuel oil-fired power station in McCook, Nebraska. The outage is expected to last 67 days. The unit has a generating capacity of 55 MW. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
