Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Government of Zambia has announced an ambitious plan to increase its electricity generation capacity to approximately 10,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030, aiming to address persistent power shortages and support long-term economic growth.
Currently, Zambia's installed generation capacity stands at around 3,500-3,900 MW, highlighting the need for a significant scale-up of the power sector. The country is also facing an estimated power deficit of more than 1,600 MW, driven largely by heavy reliance on hydropower and climate-induced drought conditions.
The expansion strategy is based on a diversified energy mix, combining hydropower, solar, and thermal generation. Approximately 3,000 MW is expected to come from coal, while the majority of the remaining capacity will be sourced from renewable energy, particularly hydropower and solar. To achieve the 2030 target, the government estimates that around US$11 billion will be required for new generation projects as well as transmission and distribution infrastructure.
