Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Kenya's Ministry of Energy and Petroleum aims to add 5,000 megawatts (MW) to the national grid by 2016. The ministry issued an expression of interest (EOI) request in September for the development of a 960-MW, coal-fired power plant in Lamu and a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fired plant in Dongo Kundi, Mombasa.
The ministry has received 62 applications from local and international firms interested in the two projects in response to the EOI. The coal-fired plant attracted 26 companies, while the other 36 focused on the gas-fired plant.
The evaluation of the applications will begin this week, and 10 qualifying firms will then move on to submit full applications in response to the request for proposal (RFP). The ministry will then take 75 days to evaluate before selecting two companies for each project.
The cabinet secretary said that the program had been a success, as the ministry requested a business plan from the private investors and agreed on the cost of power, which they will purchase when the projects are operational.
Construction on the coal-fired plant will take 30 months and the gas-fired project will take 24 months.
