Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Power Africa Transactions and Reform Program, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has awarded Tetra Tech (NASDAQ:TTEK) (Pasadena, California) a $64 million contract to provide technical assistance for the program. The five-year contract has a base period of three years, plus a two-year option.
The deal requires Tetra Tech to support President Barack Obama's Power Africa initiative, which is intended to increase the amount of electricity available in Sub-Saharan Africa, through a private-sector-led model for development. Under the initiative, 12 U.S. government agencies are working with multilateral organizations, African governments and the U.S. private sector to add power generation capacity in the region.

Tetra Tech will support the government's efforts to speed up the generation and transmission of sustainable power in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Tanzania.
The company will identify and design ways to develop small-scale, clean-energy projects to increase access in rural areas; develop a robust pipeline of power generation projects using a transaction-based approach; support the strengthening of regulatory and institutional policies; and provide direct programmatic support to the Power Africa's coordinator's office.
