Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $87.34 billion worth of active and unconfirmed projects in the U.S. that are set to kick off before the end of the year. About 70% are attributed to the Oil & Gas Production, Power, Industrial Manufacturing and Alternative Fuels industries, each of which has at least one major project worth $1 billion or more.

Not surprisingly, the Oil & Gas Production Industry leads the pack with more than $21 billion in projects. The industry is driving much of the $30.71 billion in activity in the Southwestern region, including Applied Natural Gas Fuels Incorporated's (Westlake Village, California) $1 billion construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Midlothian, Texas. The project, which is the first of five phases, involves constructing a plant that will produce about 1 million metric tonnes per year of LNG, with an LNG storage capacity of 47,000 metric tonnes. Construction is expected to be complete in March 2015.

The Power Industry accounts for nearly $15 billion in projects set to kick off in this quarter, including one of the leading projects in the Great Lakes region: USA Synthetic Fuels Corporation's (Cincinnati, Ohio) $1 billion construction of an integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant in Lima, Ohio. Construction on the project started in 2005, but was halted the following year due to a lack of financial support. The resumed project involves gasifying petroleum coke coal to produce syngas, which will fuel two 180-megawatt (MW) combustion turbine generators, two heat-recovery steam generators (HRSGs), and a 240-MW steam turbine generator. Completion is expected in mid-2017.

The Industrial Manufacturing Industry is not far behind with $13.5 billion in total projects, with Hawaii hosting one of the biggest: Honolulu's $1.04 billion addition to a light rail system. The new line, part of a 20-mile transit system, will run from Aloha Stadium to Middle Street Station at Honolulu International Airport, with nine stations attached. The project is expected to be completed in May 2019. AECOM Technical Services Incorporated (Los Angeles, California) is performing design-build services.

Rounding out the top four, the Alternative Fuels Industry boasts Inland Pacific Energy Center LLC's (Nyssa, Oregon) $1.4 billion construction of a biofuels complex in Ontario, Oregon. The facility will feature a 138 million-gallon-per-year ethanol plant with a corn oil fractionation system, and a 96 million-gallon-per-year biodiesel plant and feed mill with grain canola oil feedstocks. The project is expected to be completed in April 2015.

Almost half of the total investment value of U.S. kickoffs in the fourth quarter--about $43.2 billion--is related to 572 projects that are now in the engineering stages. The nation also has 425 projects worth about $41.27 billion in the planning stages, where plenty of factors could increase, decrease or eliminate the expected spending, while 753 projects worth about $2.87 billion already have kicked off the first stage of construction and will kick off the second before the end of the year.
