Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Indian Point Energy Center, which is located in Buchanan, New York, tripped its 1,040-megawatt (MW) Unit 3 offline on Saturday due to a transformer explosion. The nuclear-powered station is owned by Entergy Nuclear Northeast, a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana).

The explosion occurred at 5:50 pm, causing Reactor 3 to shut down automatically. The fire was extinguished by the plant's fire suppression system, and the reactor was found to be in stable condition.

Officials expect repairs to be completed within the next three weeks. They also are trying to contain and clean up transformer fluid that leaked from Unit 3. Oil in the transformer leaked into a holding tank that did not have the capacity to contain all the fluid, which entered the Hudson River through a discharge drain.

No one was injured in the explosion.

The incident was the second shutdown in three days. Unit 3 was shut down on Thursday morning for an unrelated trip.
