Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City, Mexico) has awarded the construction contract for the Empalme II 700-megawatt (MW), combined-cycle, natural gas-fired electric power station to be located in the southeast region of Mexico's Sonora State. The estimated investment for the project is $725 million.
The construction contract was awarded to a consortium comprising Duro Felguera SA (MCE:MDF) (Oviedo, Spain), and Elecnor de Mexico, SA de CV (Mexico City). The Empalme II power station will consist of 2-on-1 heavy frame combustion turbine generator with heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) driving a single condensing steam turbine. The plant will also consist of a simplified cooling system. The station will help meet growing demand for electrical power in Mexico's northeast region, and was tendered by the CFE as a financed public works project. CFE's network will provide the natural gas to operate the power station.
The project is estimated to create about 350 site preparation and construction jobs. About 15-25 permanent positions will be created for labor security, operation and maintenance of the power station. Transmission lines and a 400-kilovolt substation will be included in the infrastructure.
CFE plans to begin construction by early-to-mid 2016. The power station is scheduled for full operation by late 2018.
