Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bechtel Group Incorporated (San Francisco, California) announced that it will begin work later this month on Advanced Power AG's (Zug, Switzerland) natural-gas fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) Cricket Valley Energy Center, which Bechtel said will provide electricity for 1 million homes in New York. Advanced Power had awarded Bechtel the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. Industrial Info is tracking more than $2.6 billion in active projects involving the energy center, and more than $121 billion in projects involving Bechtel.

Located in Dover Plains, the $1.4 billion Cricket Valley Energy Center, would generate 1,100 megawatts (MW) from three General Electric (NYSE:GE) combustion-turbine generators, each with a capacity of 200 MW and paired with a duct-fired heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG) and a 133.2-MW GE steam-turbine generator. Bechtel currently expects the plant to be completed in 2020.

Advanced Power and Bechtel are preparing the $1.2 billion dismantlement and demolition of the existing site, which had been used for magnesium refining and tire recycling, among other purposes. For more information, including project specifications and contractor contact information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the NGCC facility and the site demolition.

In addition to the NGCC facility itself, Industrial Info is tracking the construction of a $14 million Pleasant Valley-to-Cricket Valley Transmission Line, a new overhead, high-voltage power line that will run 14.6 miles from the existing, 345-kilovolt (kV) Pleasant Valley Substation in Pleasant Valley, New York, to the $6 million Cricket Valley Switchyard in Dover Plains. The gas-insulated switchyard is undergoing site preparation and is expected to be completed in November; Cricket Valley Energy Center LLC also will reconduct a 3.4-mile segment of the existing 345-kV line. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the transmission line and the switchyard station.

"We are committed to helping New York State meet its growing energy needs sustainably, and we will support the local supply chain by hiring local craft and suppliers," said Scott Osborne, the global sector lead for Bechtel's power business, in a press release. Added Tom Spang, the chief executive officer of Advanced Power: "The Cricket Valley Energy Center is an important step for America's move forward into cleaner energy production. We look forward to breathing new life into this dormant site as we move from development into construction."

Cricket Valley is the second NGCC facility that Bechtel has undertaken for Advanced Power; the first, the 700-MW, $800 million Carroll County Energy Center in Carrollton, Ohio, began construction in 2015 and is expected to wrap up later this year. It comprises two GE combustion-turbine generators, each with a 210-MW capacity and a CMI triple-pressure reheat HRSG, and a 280-MW GE steam turbine. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.9 billion in other active NGCC projects involving Bechtel. The largest under construction is Panda Power Funds' (Dallas, Texas) $850 million Hummel Power Station in Shamokin Dam, Pennsylvania, which will generate 1,000 MW from three Siemens combustion-turbine generators, each with a capacity of 242 MW and duct-fired HRSGs, and a 274-MW steam-turbine generator. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
