Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) reports that the Cove Point liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Maryland is 95% complete and should be ready for startup this quarter, with commercial operations starting by the end of the year. In a conference call regarding the company's second-quarter 2017 performance, Chief Executive Officer Tom Farrell gave updates about this and other Dominion projects. Industrial Info is tracking $39.6 billion in active Dominion projects.

The Cove Point facility will be capable of producing 5.25 million tons per year of LNG for export. Construction on the facility, which has an estimated total investment value of $4 billion, kicked off in 2014. Speaking of the project, Farrell said, "Our Cove Point liquefaction project is now 95% complete and remains on time and on budget. Engineering and procurement is essentially finished. Structural steel and large diameter piping installation are coming to completion, and the post-installation pipe testing is essentially complete. ... As we work toward commercial in-service later this year, we will bring the project to a state of 'ready for startup' this quarter, and construction will reach essentially complete status." For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Farrell also gave guidance on other projects, including the 1,588-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plant in Greensville County, Virginia. The project began construction in 2015, with Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). "As of June 30, the $1.3 billion project was 47% complete," said Farrell. "All three gas turbines, the gas turbine-generators, as well as the steam turbine-generator and casing have been placed on their foundations. ... Greensville is expected to achieve commercial operations late next year." For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

"We have a number of solar projects under development and continue to see demand for renewables from our customers, including data centers, military installations and the state government," said Farrell. "Three of these facilities, totaling 119 MW, achieved commercial operations during the second quarter. In total, we have announced 438 MW that will go into service this year and expect to add another 200 MW by the end of next year, bringing our gross operating portfolio to 1,800 MW, about 700 of which will be in Virginia and North Carolina."

Among Dominion's solar facilities that are planned to go into service this year is the 20-MW solar plant in Remington, Virginia. Construction on the $40 million facility began earlier this year and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter. Black & Veatch (Overland Park, Kansas) is performing engineering work on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Last month, Dominion announced that it would construct two offshore 6-MW wind turbines as part of a pilot offshore wind project off the Virginia coast. For more information, see July 12, 2017, article - Dominion Partners with Denmark's DONG Energy for U.S. Offshore Wind Pilot Project. "If the turbines demonstrate that they work well in these waters and produce the kind of capacity we expect, then it's up to 2,000 MW of offshore wind that would be available," said Farrell. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the pilot project and 2,000-MW major project.

Among Dominion's biggest current projects is the Atlantic Coast natural gas pipeline, which will run 600 miles from West Virginia to North Carolina, carrying up to 1.5 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. The project received a favorable final environmental impact statement from the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last month. For more details, see July 25, 2017, article - FERC Gives Environmental OK for Dominion's Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Speaking of the project, Farrell said, "We remain on track to start construction later this year and expect completion of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the supply header in the second half of 2019." For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina sections of the pipeline.
