Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tyr Energy Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) last week announced that it has begun construction on the Hickory Run Energy Center in Pennsylvania. The natural gas-fired, combined-cycle plant has a nominal generating capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW). Industrial Info is tracking nine natural gas-fired power plants with a combined total investment value of $6.2 billion that are planned to kick off construction in the U.S. this year.

The Hickory Run plant is located in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, and is planned to be operational in the second quarter of 2020. Kiewit Power Constructors Company (Lenexa, Kansas) is acting as contractor on the project, which will use two Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) gas turbine-generators, two heat-recovery steam generators and a Siemens steam turbine-generator. The project has an estimated total investment value of $950 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Natural gas-fired power plants continue springing up throughout the U.S. as cheap, abundant gas from shale formations continues to be plentiful and several coal-fired power plants are retired for economic or environmental reasons. Among the largest natural gas-fired projects set to kick off in the U.S. is FGE Power's (Houston, Texas) Eagle Pines Energy Center near New Summerfield, Texas. The plant will have a generating capacity of more than 1,100 MW. Construction on the $1.1 billion project is set to kick off in the third quarter of this year and be completed in early 2020. SNC-Lavalin Constructors Incorporated (Bothell, Washington) is performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. The plant could potentially be expanded in the future for a generating capacity of more than 3,300 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the potential Phase II and Phase III of the project.

In Ohio, Advanced Power AG (Zug, Switzerland) plans to start construction on an 1,100-MW combined-cycle power plant in Wellsville in the fourth quarter of this year. The facility will use General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) equipment. Bechtel Power Corporation (Frederick, Maryland) is performing engineering, procurement and construction on the project, which is planned to be completed in summer 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

One of the highest-value natural gas-fired projects set to kick off this year is occurring in Maryland. Panda Power Funds' (Dallas, Texas) Mattawoman Generating Station has an estimated total investment value of $1.2 billion. Construction on the project is planned to kick off in the third quarter of this year and be completed before the end of 2019. The plant will have a generating capacity of 990 MW. Bechtel Power also is acting as EPC contractor on this project. WorleyParsons Limited (North Sydney, Australia) is performing engineering on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
