Six Counties in Texas Attract Billions in Industrial Project Spending Planned for 2008
A closer look at where those projects fall geographically reveals six Texas counties where the majority of the spending is targeted.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A recent survey of industrial projects scheduled to begin construction during 2008 revealed the top 10 states for industrial project spending (See related March 20, 2008, article - Texas Rockets to the Top 10 States for Industrial Project Spending in 2008). Texas is the top state for 2008 with 611 projects totaling more than $30 billion. A closer look at where those projects fall geographically reveals six Texas counties where the majority of the spending is targeted. Listed in order from greatest to least amount of spending, Jefferson, Brazoria, Harris, Calhoun, McLennan and Nueces counties each has at least a billion dollars worth of industrial projects scheduled to begin construction in 2008.
Jefferson County, Texas, is No. 1 on the list with 71 projects totaling $4.5 billion. This represents a 55% increase in project activity for Jefferson County when compared with the $2.9 billion worth of projects that were on the books for kickoff in 2007. In April, PD Glycol Limited, a joint venture between Equistar and DuPont, is planning to begin a three- to four-week maintenance turnaround to perform preventative maintenance work and tie in capital projects at the company's ethylene glycol processing plant in Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas. According to the company's website, PD Glycol procures more than $21 million worth of goods and services every year. Also in Jefferson County, Motiva Enterprises LLC is scheduled to begin construction this year on a $300 million crude unit addition, a part of a $7 billion refinery expansion at the company's Port Arthur Refinery.
Other counties with a billion dollars or more in planned construction starts this year include Brazoria with 27 projects totaling $3.9 billion, Harris with 124 projects totaling $2.3 billion, Calhoun with eight projects totaling $1.5 billion and McLennan with seven projects totaling $1.5 billion.
