Nu-Energie Holds Grand Opening Event for New Tennessee Biodiesel Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor--owned Nu-Energies LLC (Blountville, Tennessee) held a grand opening event yesterday to mark the completion and commissioning of its new biodiesel plant in Surgoinsville, Tennessee. Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture Ken Givens and Commissioner of Economic and Community Development Matt Kisber, along with company officials, attended the event at the plant site in the Phipps Bend Industrial Park in Surgoinsville.

The plant was built inside an existing 13,000-square-foot building that was to be the wire house for the Phipps Bend Nuclear Plant that started construction in the 1970s but was aborted. Nu-Energie's plant manager Mark Yonts tells Industrial Info, "This is a state-of-the-art plant that we built entirely ourselves and are very proud of that. We are using our own technology and only needed assistance calibrating our Siemens PCS automation system."

The plant will initially produce 5 million gallons per year of biodiesel from soybean oil feedstocks. Line two, another 5 million gallon per year line is scheduled to be operating by January of 2009 followed by line three in July of 2009 taking the plant to 15 million gallons per year annually.

The production line consists of a transesterification reactor, neutralization system, separation system that removes the glycerin, purifiers and a quality control lab. Finished product will be stored in the plants tank farm consisting of seven 30,000 gallon storage tanks.

Because of the fact that the company used an existing building and built the facility from scratch with no outside help, Yonts says the plant only cost around $2 million to build. The company also received grant money to bring rail service back to the industrial park.

Industrial Info's Ethanol Database provides a comprehensive outline of all current development activities in the emerging alternative fuels market. This database covers 147 ethanol plants in operation and 530 plants under development. It also covers 98 operational biodiesel plants and 245 biodiesel plants under development.
