"Grassoline" Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Breaks Ground Today in Tennessee

The joint venture between the university, DuPont (NYSE:DD) (Wilmington, Delaware), Genencor International Incorporated (Palo Alto, California) and Danisco (CPH:DCO) (Copenhagen, Denmark) will break ground on the DuPont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol LLC "Grassoline" cellulosic ethanol plant.

The event is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the Niles Ferry Industrial Park. Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, Sen. Bob Corker, and Congressmen Zack Wamp and John Duncan Jr. are expected to attend, along with university President John Peterson.

Plans call for the creation of a demonstration-scale 250,000-gallon-per-year ethanol plant that will utilize nongrain feedstock of switchgrass, wood chips, and other forest and agricultural biomass to produce the fuel. Cost estimates to build the plant are in the $140 million range.

Construction is expected to take 14 months, and the facility should be fully operational by December 2009.
