Georgia-Pacific Considers Louisiana Site for New Tissue Paper Machine

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In the coming weeks, Georgia-Pacific LLC (Atlanta, Georgia), a unit of Koch Industries Incorporated (Wichita, Kansas), may announce that it has chosen a site in Zachary, Louisiana, to build a new tissue paper machine. The company has approved funding for final engineering for two paper machines and associated converting equipment to manufacture premium tissue products for the consumer market. The two machines will utilize advanced, proprietary tissue paper-making technology, and investment in the machines could exceed $500 million. The new machine is slated to come online in 2012.

The Zachary site is among several under consideration and is home to one of Georgia-Pacific's largest pulp & paper complexes. Operations at the site began in 1968. Today, the complex's major operations consist of two fiber lines, two paper machines that make fine papers, a machine that produces towel paper, another machine dedicated to tissue paper, converting operations and a power plant.

Georgia-Pacific recently completed the installation of a new circulating fluidized-bed boiler and a 65-megawatt Dresser steam turbine. The turbine is driven by a tri-fuel boiler capable of producing 1 million pounds of steam per hour. Most of the boiler fuel is sludge and bark waste, as well as petroleum coke and, when necessary, natural gas.

Georgia-Pacific, formerly a publicly traded company, became a unit of Koch Industries when it was purchased for $22 billion in 2005.
