BP Australia Puts Clean Fuel Plans for Kwinana Refinery On Hold

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--BP Australia's proposal to convert its former oil refinery in Kwinana in Western Australia into renewable fuels and green hydrogen facilities stalled due to rising construction costs and the lack of a governmental renewable fuels mandate.

The first phase of the H2Kwinana project--which planned to install a 100-megawatt electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen and derivatives--was expected to produce 14,000 tons per year of green hydrogen for domestic and export industries. The Kwinana Renewable Fuels (KRF) project was designed to produce sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel using renewable feedstocks such as used cooking oil and other biomass. Although BP Australia has reevaluated its strategies, the company remains committed to reviving the projects based upon government subsidies and policy considerations.
