Summary
Canada is among the more trustworthy trading partners in the world, Canada's prime minister said after a successful investment conference in Toronto. On Wednesday, he was in France looking for further cooperation with the European Union.'Canada is Building Big'
Departing for France on Wednesday to meet with European delegates, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said an investment summit in Toronto drew in US$360 billion in commitments, from strategic infrastructure to critical minerals."The Canada Investment Summit brought the world to Canada with a clear message," Carney said in a statement. "Canada is building big."
Industrial Info Resources data show hundreds of grassroots projects related to mining and minerals across Canada with a total investment value of US$204 billion. Readers can view a full list of detailed project reports. That compares to US$180 billion in the United States.
For Canada, the largest by investment value is the Kugluktuk Izok Lake A-G/U-G facility in northeastern Nanuvet territory, tapping the critical minerals zinc and copper. For just zinc alone, Industrial Info Resources finds the facility would have a planned capacity of 5.8 million tons per year, and operations could begin as soon as 2030 for Australian mining company MMG Ltd. Carney since assuming office in 2025 has worked to make the case that Canada is a leading power, both economically and politically. A speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January resonated for advocating an alliance of so-called middle powers that would counter the influence of the world's superpowers at a time when global connections are realigning.
From Toronto, he made the case that Canada is a superpower in its own right on energy and trade, boasting that Canada is the best-connected economy in the world and the most competitive for new business investments among members of the G7.
Investors from more than 30 countries, managing trillions of dollars in assets, were on hand for what was Canada's first-ever investment summit.
"They came to Toronto because they see Canada's economic strength and ambition -- and they want to invest in it," Carney's office said.
The government made its own commitments as well, steering some $100 million from a growth fund to support the Marathon mining project in Ontario, led by Generation Mining. Industrial Info Resources on Wednesday published an in-depth profile of the Marathon facility, which is expected to produce 42 million pounds of copper and 168,000 ounces of palladium annually over a 13-year life span. Those materials are integral for electronics and automotive catalytic converters.
Industrial Info Resources data show the mine should go into service by 2028.
Foreign Investments Already Making Headway
European companies are already entrenched in the Canadian energy space. The largest offshore project by investment value in Canada is the Bay du Nord facility in the Atlantic, led by Norwegian energy company Equinor. The federal government has described Bay du Nord as a "new frontier," where production could reach a peak of 160,000 barrels per day and include 1.2 million barrels in storage. The Canada Energy Regulator reported that, in terms of percent, Newfoundland and Labrador is the fastest-growing province for oil production in the nation.
On Europe, Carney has floated the idea of a special relationship with the European Union that would stop short of full membership. He met Wednesday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Strasbourg, France, before addressing the European Parliament.
"We share one ocean, one set of values, one way of seeing the world," von der Leyen said in an address to Parliament. "And we will now build our shared future as well."
Canada may become the first associate member of the European Union.
