Among the aspects of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. is a shift toward e-commerce, and away from traditional brick-and-mortar stores, and Clayco is at work on several projects for the leader in the field, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Among of the largest of these projects is a $250 million fulfillment center and delivery station at the site of the former Pontiac Silverdome stadium in Pontiac, Michigan. The project entails a 199,000-square-foot delivery station, which is expected to be completed later this year, and an 820,000-square-foot fulfillment center for warehousing and distribution operations, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2021. Construction began late last year, with Clayco acting as general contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Clayco also is involved in a few automotive projects. Clayco last year began general contracting work on a body shop expansion for Volkswagen's (Wolfsburg, Germany) plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The 770,000-square-foot building addition will allow for the production of the automaker's new electric crossover vehicle for the North American market. The facility will be able to manufacture approximately 240,000 units per year. Construction is expected to be completed in first-quarter 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Clayco also is involved in the battery-supply project for Volkswagen's crossover. SK Innovation Company Limited (Seoul, South Korea) will manufacture lithium-ion batteries for Volkswagen and Ford (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) at two plants in Commerce, Georgia, about 65 miles northeast of Atlanta. Construction on the first plant, which will supply Volkswagen and have a manufacturing capacity of 9.8 gigawatt-hours per year, began early last year and is expected to be completed in early 2022. Construction on Plant 2, which will supply a Ford facility in Kentucky, is expected to begin later this year, for completion in second-quarter 2023. This plant will have a manufacturing capacity of 11.7 gigawatt-hours per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Plant 1 and Plant 2.
Clayco also is moving beyond the automotive sector with the construction of a 400,000-square-foot rocket engine manufacturing plant for Blue Origin (Kent, Washington) in Huntsville, Alabama. Construction began early last year and is expected to be completed in fourth-quarter 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the largest planned projects in which Clayco has a hand is Braidy Industries Incorporated's (Ashland, Kentucky) grassroot aluminum rolling mill in Argillite, Kentucky. The 1.8 million-square-foot mill would have a production capacity of 370,000 tons per year of aluminum sheet and plate for the automotive and aerospace industries. The project, which Industrial Info has classified as having a medium probability (70-80%) of starting construction as planned, could begin early next year and be completed in mid-2022. However, whether this project moves forward could depend on how much the automotive sector recovers in the coming months. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
