Hawaii Multi-fuel Generating Station Project Breaks Ground

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) (Honolulu) and the U.S. Army recently broke ground on a multi-fuel, 50-megawatt (MW) generating station to be located on the grounds of the Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield in Hawaii.

The biofuel-capable facility will be built on leased land at the U.S. Army's Schofield Barracks. The project will utilize six Wartsila internal combustion engines. Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) will act as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor and will also be responsible for hiring sub-contractors for the duration of the project.

The project will involve up to 300 union workers at the peak of construction. The facility will provide grid stability to the U.S. Army and residents of Oahu. HECO will own and operate the facility.

The project has a total investment value (TIV) of $167 million and is expected to be completed in December 2017.
