Hawaii Hosts $523.5 Million in Project Kickoffs in 2016

Hawaii's 11 projects set to kick off in 2016 cover a wide range of industries. The leaders, however, in terms of project spending, include Power and Alternative Fuel.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 11 industrial projects that are expected to kick off this year in Hawaii cover a wide range of industries, according to Industrial Info's database. The leading industries, in terms of project spending, include Power and Alternative Fuels.

Other industries with planned project kickoffs this year in the Aloha State are Food & Beverage, Pharmaceutical & Biotech, Chemical Processing and Petroleum Refining.

The Power Industry has two projects worth $222 million, the largest of which is the $167 million, 50-megawatt (MW) Schofield Barracks Generating Station owned by Hawaii Electric Company Incorporated (Honolulu). The project has a construction kickoff planned for May and a completion date of December 2017. For more information, see project report.

The Alternative Fuel Industry also has two projects kicking off this year, with a total investment value (TIV) of $208 million. The largest is the $150 million Puunene Energy Biogas Plant and materials recovery facility. The plant will also house a technology anaerobic digester to process 125,000 tons per year of crops and waste and convert it into 500 million British Thermal Units (MM/BTU) of biogas per day. Out of the four food and beverage projects worth $58 million, the $20 million Kailua Kona Brewery, owned by Kona Brewing Company (Kailua), is Hawaii's largest. It will entail constructing a 30,000-square-foot brewery and resource recovery center at a 2.6-acre site in the Kailua Kona area. With kick off expected in May, the brewery is set to be complete in August of next year. For more information on this facility, see project report.

The $33 million addition to the Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii and Hilo is the state's only Pharma & Biotech project kicking off this year. The project will consist of a two-story, 45,000-square-foot building to support the university's pharmacy program.
