Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Iowa continues to lead the U.S. in ethanol and biodiesel production, according to year-end production numbers. Iowa produced more than 3.6 billion gallons of ethanol and a record 230 million gallons of biodiesel in 2013.
More than 23 million acres of land were dedicated to corn and soybeans last year. The state produced 2.3 billion bushels of corn and 466 bushels of soybean.
There are 42 operating fuel ethanol plants in Iowa that represent nearly 30% of all production in the U.S., and there are 13 operating biodiesel plants in the state.
Even though new biofuel plant construction has slowed, there is still more than $555 million in capital project spending planned for 2014.
Much of the investment is planned for plants already in operation, like Corn LP in Goldfield. The company plans to retrofit the plant to produce more than 40 million gallons per year of bio-based isobutanol. Lincolnway Energy in Nevada is planning a similar conversion to produce isobutanol.
Others like POET (Emmetsburg, Iowa) and Quad County Corn Processors (Galva, Iowa) are converting plants from corn feedstock to cellulosic.
Fiberight (Blairstown, Iowa) also plans to produce cellulosic ethanol in Blairstown and Marion this year.
The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association was formed in 2002 to represent the state's ethanol and biodiesel producers. The trade group fosters the development and growth of the renewable fuels industry in the state through education, promotion, legislation and infrastructure development.
