Louisiana's current LNG construction activity is dominated by Venture Global LNG (Arlington, Virginia), which is underway with work at its Plaquemines and Calcasieu Pass plants. Construction of Venture Global's grassroot Plaquemines facility kicked off last year. The first phase of the project entails installing nine production modules, each producing about 1.5 million metric tons per year, for combined annual production of about 13.6 million metric tons. This first phase is expected to be completed next summer.
Construction to further expand the plant's production capacity kicked off recently. This will expand the plant by another nine modules, doubling LNG production capacity to 27.2 million tons per year. The expansion is expected to be completed in 2026. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the projects on the first phase of construction and the expansion project.
Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Kiewit Energy Company (Lenexa, Kansas) is putting the finishing touches on Venture Global's expansion of its Calcasieu Pass plant. Kiewit kicked off construction in 2021 and is responsible for installing four production modules, each producing 1.25 million metric tons per year, to increase the facility's production by 5 million tons annually. But there is so much more happening in Louisiana besides LNG activity. Embracing the state's strong tradition in the petrochemical industry, Methanex Corporation (NASDAQ:MEOH) (Vancouver, British Columbia) is adding a methanol production unit to its facility in Geismar. Methanex is expanding the plant's methanol production capacity by 1.8 million metric tons per year. EPC contractor KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston, Texas) began work at the site in 2019 and is expected to wrap up later this year. Also in Geismar, Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California) is expanding its renewable diesel plant to help meet the country's growing demand for the greener form of the fuel. Chevron began installing additional process equipment at the 90 million-gallon-per-year plant in 2021. Upon completion, which is expected later this year, the facility will have more than tripled its production capacity to 340 million gallons per year. In another nod toward greener energy, Lightsource bp (London, England) is constructing its Oxbow solar power project near Ventress, Louisiana, about 30 miles northeast of Baton Rouge. Construction of the solar farm kicked off in 2021. The facility will use First Solar Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) Series 6 solar modules to generate 345 megawatts. The facility is expected to begin operations later this year and will be Louisiana's largest solar farm. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for more information.
Down the road in Baton Rouge, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) in 2021 began work on a regional fulfillment and distribution center at the site of a former mall. The five-story, 3.8 million-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in 2024 and will strengthen Amazon's fulfillment services in the Baton Rouge area.
But that's not all Amazon is up to in the state. In Shreveport, Amazon is underway with Project Cosmeaux, a 3.4 million-square-foot fulfillment center that will use robotics to help pick, pack and ship smaller customer items such as books, toys and electronics. The facility is expected to be completed early next year.
