Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--M.A. Mortenson Construction (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is making good on its reputation as a top engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, with more than $7 billion in active projects crisscrossing the continental U.S. About $5.5 billion worth already are under construction, but the list isn't limited to renewable-energy projects, which have been the company's bread and butter; it includes pharmaceutical and technological manufacturing facilities.

Earlier this month, MidAmerican Energy Company (Des Moines, Iowa) selected Mortenson as the EPC company for the $300 million Beaver Creek Windfarm in Boone, Iowa. The 170-megawatt (MW) facility--which will comprise 85 turbines from Vestas (Aarhus, Denmark), each with a capacity of 2 MW--is Mortenson's 13th project for MidAmerican. Mortenson already has built 55% of all the windfarms in Iowa, according to its web site. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Mortenson is attached to $1.92 billion worth of other wind-energy projects across the U.S. that are under construction or in their final engineering phases, including:
  • Aksamit Resource Management's (Houston, Texas) $525 million Milligan I Windfarm in Swanton, Nebraska, which will generate 300 MW from 150 Vestas turbines; for more information, see Industrial Info's project report
  • Xcel Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) $500 million Rush Creek Windfarm Phase I in Silma, Colorado, which will generate 300 MW from 150 Vestas turbines; for more information, see Industrial Info's project report
  • Xcel Energy's $500 million Rush Creek Windfarm Phase II, which add another 300 MW from 150 Vestas turbines; for more information, see Industrial Info's project report
  • Akuo Energy's (Paris, France) $285 million Rocksprings Windfarm in Juno, Texas, which will generate 150 MW from 69 General Electric (NYSE:GE) (GE) turbines; for more information, see Industrial Info's project report
  • Aksamit Resource Management's $110 million Milligan III Windfarm in Swanton, Nebraska, which will add 74 MW from 37 Vestas turbines; for more information, see Industrial Info's project report
Mortenson also would serve as EPC contractor for SunWind Energy Group LLLP's (Henderson, Nevada) proposed, $400 million Doyle Windfarm near Marion, Kansas. The facility, which is in its early review phase, would generate more than 200 MW from 118 GE turbines, each with a capacity of 1.7 MW. Construction is not expected to begin until the first quarter of 2018, at the earliest. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In addition to its windfarm projects, Mortenson has more than $1.5 billion worth of projects in the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry, including two under or nearing construction: Kansas State University's $1.25 billion, second-phase research and development center in Manhattan, Kansas, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) (Washington, D.C.) $160 million in upfits and modernizations at its Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia. The KSU project, which is being handled as part of a joint venture with McCarthy Building Companies Incorporated (Houston), will replace the aging Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York. It will house laboratories that explore human, foreign animal and zoonotic diseases, as well as develop large livestock vaccines. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The USDA's project is expected to overhaul existing facilities and add five buildings to explore national and international exotic, emerging and endemic poultry viral diseases. Construction is expected to begin later this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
