Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex (FWB:NDX1) (Hamburg, Germany) has landed a deal to supply 50 turbines to one of the largest onshore windfarm projects in the Netherlands.

The company has been contracted by Nuon Energy (Amsterdam, Netherlands), part of Swedish energy major Vattenfall AB (Stockholm, Sweden) to supply its N117/3600 turbines for the expansion of the Wieringermeer Polder windfarm, located north of the capital city of Amsterdam. The expansion project will boost the windfarm's current generating capacity from 49 megawatts (MW) to 180 MW. Nordex said that the windfarm has an above-average capacity factor of 42% due the "excellent" average wind speed of 8.6 metres per second (m/s). Installation will start in March next year, and Nordex will create a local operation to provide ongoing servicing and maintenance.

In September, Industrial Info reported that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) signed a deal with Vattenfall to buy 100% of the power from the Wieringermeer Polder windfarm project. It will power its data centre operations nearby, which serve as a regional hub to deliver Microsoft Cloud services to customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "Sustainability is an important part of our DNA, which is why we are striving for sustainable solutions in different areas," explained Patxi Landa, chief sales officer for Nordex SE. "This includes the interests of the immediate neighbourhood as well as the CO2 emissions that can be avoided. Located 60 kilometres north of Amsterdam, the site is subject to noise emission restrictions, which the turbines are able to meet. At the same time, the windfarm will prevent the emission of around 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually which would otherwise be produced by a mix of gas and coal-fuelled power stations."

Ruben Lindenburg, project director of Nuon for Wind Farm Wieringermeer, added: "Everybody is looking forward to the start of this large project. We have already made the first preparations in the area and are glad to have professional companies with whom we will work closely to realise the installation of the first 50 turbines of this windfarm."

Vattenfall has set out an ambitious Nordic windfarm construction plan, having recently placed the world's largest offshore wind turbine order of 2017. The company has contracted newly formed Siemens-Gamesa (Madrid, Spain) to supply 113 turbines rated at 8 MW for three offshore windfarms in Denmark: Kriegers Flak in the Baltic Sea and Vesterhav Syd and Nord in the North Sea.
