March 25, 2016--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Quebec is holding steady in its project outlook for second-quarter 2016, as the province is generally faring better than the rest of Canada amid the downturn in commodity prices. Quebec has $2.91 billion in projects set to begin construction from April through June, an amount that is basically unchanged from the previous quarter. More than 85% of the total can be attributed to just three industries: Metals & Minerals, Power and Pharmaceutical & Biotech.

The Metals & Minerals Industry, a leading employer in Quebec's northern and rural areas, is far ahead of all other industries with $1.53 billion in projects set to begin construction in the second quarter. Among them is Forbes & Manhattan Incorporated's (Toronto, Ontario) $110 million construction of a graphite-processing plant in Baie-Comeau . The project, which is run by subsidiary Mason Graphite Incorporated, involves constructing a 142-ton-per-day flotation processing plant to produce 51,900 tons per year of graphite concentrate from 188,000 tons per year of graphite ore. For more information on the project, which is still in its permitting phase, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Power Industry is in a distant second place with $610 million in projected kickoffs from April through June, including Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) $110 million expansion of a windfarm in Matapedia . The third-phase project involves adding 33 Enercon E-70 wind turbine generator sets, each with a capacity of about 2.3 megawatts (MW), for a total capacity of about 75MW. For more information on the project, now in its preliminary engineering phase, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry takes the bronze with $368 million in projects slated to kick off in the second quarter, almost all of which is attributed to the University of Montreal's $350 million biomedical science complex in Montreal. Plans involve the construction of two buildings: a 430,000-square-foot science facility and a 161,000-square-foot education facility. For more information on the project, still in its detailed design phase, see Industrial Info's project report.

Here are the remaining seven highest-value projects set to begin construction in Quebec in second-quarter 2016:
  • $1.07 billion: Royal Nickel Corporation's Dumont nickel mine and mill in Amos
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $500 million: EDF S.A.'s Nicolas-Riou windfarm in Rimouski
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $270 million: Alderon Iron Ore Corporation's Kami Pointe-Noire ship-loading facilities in Sept-Iles
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $250 million: Bridgestone Corporation's tire plant in Joliette
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $36 million: Domtar Incorporated's pulp and paper mill in Windsor
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $30.2 million: Greenfield Ethanol Incorporated's ethanol in Varennes
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $27 million: ArcelorMittal's steel mill in Longueuil
For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Two-thirds of the total investment value--$1.92 billion--is tied to projects that are in the planning phases, where plenty of factors still could increase, decrease or totally eliminate the expected spending. About $930 million relates to projects that are in engineering phases, while the remaining $63 million is tied to maintenance-related projects.
