Researched by IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)--National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved generation licenses for four utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects with a combined installed capacity exceeding 1 gigawatt (GW) and a contracted capacity of 890 megawatts (MW). The approvals represent the third batch of solar projects awarded under Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). The latest approvals increase the total solar capacity awarded under Bid Window 7 to nearly 5 GW, while pushing South Africa's cumulative installed solar PV capacity beyond 10 GW.

The newly licensed developments include the Sculptor Energy power station, Springhaas Solar Facility 1, and Springhaas Solar Facility 6, all to be developed by Red Rocket South Africa, alongside the Corona Energy project, which will be developed by ENGIE. Located across the Free State and Mpumalanga provinces, the projects are expected to improve grid resilience, reduce dependence on coal-fired generation and support South Africa's decarbonization objectives. The Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database offers detailed reports on these projects.
