Texas Solar Project Under Construction Moves Forward

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Avangrid Incorporated (NYSE:AGR) (Orange, Connecticut), a subsidiary of Iberdrola S.A. (Bilbao, Spain), said Tuesday it continues to advance a solar project underway in Texas, where Industrial Info is tracking more than $12 billion worth of solar-generation projects under construction.

Avangrid said it has installed both main power transformers at its True North solar facility in Mart, Texas, in Falls County, which is designed to generate 240 megawatts (MW) from photovoltaic (PV) solar modules (panels). Installation of modules and the racking system also is underway, and the project remains on schedule to be completed toward the end of the year. The project has a power purchase agreement (PPA) in place with Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) to supply the technology company with output for Meta's upcoming data center in nearby Temple, Texas.

The latest data (through third-quarter 2023) from the Solar Energy Industries Association shows Texas trails only California in terms of installed solar capacity, with 20,028 MW compared with California's 43,244 MW.

Among the projects aimed at boosting Texas' solar power capacity is the construction of Hecate Energy's (Chicago, Illinois) 514-MW, $900 million Frye solar plant in Swisher County, in the state's Panhandle region, which is expected to wrap up later this month. Industrial Info is tracking three other projects that are well underway and expected to wrap up in April. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' (Copenhagen, Denmark) $536 million Fighting Jays solar plant in Fort Bend County, about 40 miles south of downtown Houston, will utilize 1 million PV solar panels to provide 350 MW of generation, and Clearway Energy's (NYSE:CWEN) (Princeton, New Jersey) 255-MW Texas Solar Nova 1 project in Jayton, in West Texas, will utilize solar modules from First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) on a single-axis tracking system. M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for both projects.

Meanwhile, NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) $400 million Waco solar project in Limestone County, Texas, will utilize an estimated 917,590 PV panels for up to 400 MW of solar generation. Two other solar projects, both of which have PPAs in place, are expected to wrap up toward the end of the year. Enel North America (Andover, Massachusetts), a subsidiary of Enel SpA (Rome, Italy), is at work on the approximately 202-MW, $350 million Estonian solar plant in Delta County, Texas, northeast of Dallas. Enel will provide BXP (NYSE:BXP), the largest publicly traded developer, owner, and manager of premier workplaces in the U.S, with 21 MW of power.

Ashtrom Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of Ashtrom Group (Israel), is at work on the $285 million Tierra Bonita solar plant in Fort Stockton, which will provide CPS Energy--the municipal utility of San Antonio--with output over a 20-year term.
