BHP Group Limited, operator of the Escondida Mine in Chile, reached a contract agreement with the supervisors' union at the asset on October 14 to avert a strike that could have disrupted operations. The agreement was approved by union members in a last-minute vote on the morning of October 14, after the union had already called for the beginning of a strike.
The new contract will be valid for 36 months and contains improvements in compensation, benefits and bonuses, according to several outlets.
Industrial Info Resources offers more information on Escondida in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Plant Database, where subscribers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in a detailed plant profile.
In 2017, Union No. 1 at the Escondida Mine went on strike for 44 days, reducing copper output by 214,000 tonnes and causing US$546 million in idle capacity charges.
The Escondida mine is the world's largest copper mine, with output of 1.345 million tonnes in 2025, according to Chile's Copper Commission (Cochilco). Between January and August this year, it produced 797,500 tonnes of copper, an 11.4% yearly decrease.
The production drop is driven by lower feed grades delivered to the mine's concentrators, according to BHP. The company expects to produce between 1 million and 1.1 million tonnes of copper at the asset for the 2027 fiscal year, which extends from July 2026 to June 2027.
Industrial Info Resources is tracking 21 projects related to the asset, representing more than US$11 billion of investment. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed list of project reports.
Beyond Escondida
Averting the strike at Escondida is a win for Chile. However, two worker unions at the Centinela Mine began a strike on October 7 after failed negotiations. Six days later, Antofagasta Minerals, Centinela's operator, resumed negotiations with the unions to reach an agreement.Subscribers can learn more about Centinela in a plant profile and a list of project reports.
On October 13, unions said that the number of operating haul trucks at the mine had fallen, but did not quantify any resulting loss.
Yet, on October 14, Antofagasta reported: "that it has managed to maintain its production in line with projections and in full compliance with legal requirements."
Earlier in 2026, workers at Capstone's Mantoverde Copper Mine also went on strike for over a month, affecting operations and yearly guidance. Subscribers can learn more in a detailed plant profile.
Production Setbacks
Labor disputes add to Chile's copper production obstacles in 2026. According to Cochilco, Chile produced 3.25 million tonnes of copper between January and August, a 7.7% drop compared to the same period last year. Some of Chile's key copper mines, such as Escondida, El Teniente, Centinela and Collahuasi, have seen drops in their output so far in 2026, when compared with the same period last year.
The new government of José Antonio Kast has set a goal of reaching 6 million tonnes of annual copper production by 2030. New brownfield and greenfield projects would need to come online across Chile's operations to do that.
Industrial Info Resources is tracking 279 copper-related projects in Chile, representing more than US$70 billion of investment. Of those, 221 projects, amounting to more than US$40 billion, have a scheduled completion date by December 2030. This does not mean all the projects will finish by then, as they could face delays.
Subscribers can learn more from detailed list of project reports for Chilean copper projects and those set to be completed by the end of 2030.
