Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held clean-tech company Concord Blue Energy Incorporated (Los Angeles, California) has broken ground on its long-awaited company-owned waste-to-energy facility in Edgar, Arizona.
The groundbreaking event occurred at the site that was once the location of the former Western Renewable Energy 3-megawatt waste generation facility that closed in 2003. In 2012, Western Renewable merged with Concord Blue.
Phase I engineering of the project was completed this year and was performed by Evergreen Engineering Incorporated (Eugene, Oregon). Phase II of the project involves engineering and fabricating the pre-treatment system and the reformer module, which is the heart of the project. Using Concord Blue's three-stage reformer transforms an abundance of waste streams into synthetic gas to feed an internal combustion engine that creates renewable energy.
The company's reformer technology is already in commercial operation at a new facility at Lockheed Martin's (NYSE:LMT) (Bethesda, Maryland) Mission Systems & Training facility located in Owego, New York. Additional waste-to-energy system installations are planned for Lockheed facilities in Germany and the U.K.
Construction is expected to be in full swing by the first quarter of 2017 at the Edgar location, and the company has selected Phoenix Industrial Incorporated (Vancouver, Washington) to manage the project. Park Energy Services (Minneapolis, Minnesota) will act as the general contractor.
Construction costs are estimated to be in the $5 million-plus range, and construction is scheduled for completion and commissioning by early 2018.
Once completed, the facility will process 40 tons per day of timber and forest waste material and produce 1 megawatt of electricity. Concord Blue also reached a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Navopache Electric Cooperative, which serves eastern Arizona and western New Mexico.
Concord Blue is also involved in an additional waste-to-energy facility with Lockheed Martin to construct a second-generation waste-to-liquid biofuel production facility in Bristol, Tennessee.
