Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--By the end of the third quarter of 2016, the Pharmaceutical-Biotech industry is expected to complete construction on a total of 268 North American capital and MRO (maintenance, repair and operations) projects. A recent survey of reported projects in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Online Database reveals that the projects represent a total investment value (TIV) of $5.92 billion.

Sources for the third-quarter activity include private industry, commercial developers and universities. The projects reported include grassroot facilities, major building additions to existing sites and in-plant capital. The projects are a varied group in both size and focus. The project average TIV is $22 million, a little lower than usual, but that is due to the large number of summer maintenance projects.
Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) (Foster City, California) expects to complete its 250 million grassroot sterile intravenous therapeutics plant in La Verne, California. Work on the 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility began in early 2015. Located on a 23-acre site formerly owned by Trammel Crow (Dallas, Texas), the facility will also house research laboratories and distribution-warehouse space, along with central utilities. Project team members include Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects, Rudolph & Sletten Construction and Acco Engineered Systems.
Across the country, Nanotherapeutics Incorporated (Alachua, Florida) tapped a project team that includes Causseaux, Hewett & Walpole Incorporated (engineers); RS&H (construction management) and The Whiting Turner Contacting Company, to construct a 145,000-square-foot flex-space building adjacent to its current facility. The new building will be equipped for nano-based production and development of manufacturing processes for drugs to treat bioterrorism and radiological threats in support of $400 million Department of Defense contract awarded in March 2013.
In Manati, Puerto Rico, Romark Laboratories (Tampa, Florida) invested $110 million to build a grassroot 150,000-square-foot facility for the production and R&D of small molecule cancer and infectious disease therapeutics (including components of its current product Alinia, and the product against influenza NT-300). The project team includes AMA Architects and Engineers and Caribbean Industrial Construction SE.
