Among the sectors that feature prominently in the region's planned activity is warehousing and distribution, thanks in large part to several data center projects, which are included in this category. Among the largest of the planned projects is Google parent company Alphabet Incorporated's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California) plans for its "Project Kale" data center in Loudoun County, Virginia. The facility is being built on a 57-acre site in a business park and will include a 288,000-square-foot building to provide regional support for Google projects and data services. Construction on the $150 million project is to expected to wrap up in the summer of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Chester, Virginia, Torch Clean Energy LLC (Houston, Texas) plans to construct a grassroot data center that will be built in combination with a 150-megawatt solar farm. Three subsequent phases of construction are planned. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The semiconductors and computers sector also features prominently in the region thanks in large part to Cree Incorporated's (Durham, North Carolina) expansion of its semiconductor manufacturing plant in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The project is part of a $1 billion investment and entails installing a new silicon carbide crystal growth facility to expand semiconductors materials production 30-fold to meet increasing demand from the automotive sector. The project is expected to kick off early in the year and be completed by yearend. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
While the Mid-Atlantic region's automotive sector footprint is not as large as that of the Great Lakes or Southeast regions, Volvo Group (Gothenburg, Sweden) has plans to upgrade plants in Virginia and Maryland. The company's truck assembly plant in Dublin, Virginia, will have upgrades to its paint operations as well as the installation of new equipment to improve overall material and production flow. Volvo's powertrain manufacturing plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, will add a new machining operation to expand its automated manual transmission assembly. The projects have a combined total investment value of $93 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Virginia and Maryland plants.
Logistics projects also feature in the region's planned activity, and in South Carolina, the state port authority plans to begin an inland port container terminal expansion in Greer. The project will include improvement to rail tracks and the installation of a third rail line, an expanded area to include more stack containers as well as the installation of two cranes to move containers between trucks and trains. The project is expected to be completed in early 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Also in Greer, International Mold Corporation (Greer) plans to expand its plastic injection and blow molding plant by constructing a 100,000-square-foot building addition with supporting equipment and systems to increase plant capacity and efficiency. The project is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
