U.S. Mid-Atlantic Region Plans for More than $2.8 Billion in First-Quarter Industrial Manufacturing Project Starts

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Like other U.S. regions, the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, is seeing strong Industrial Manufacturing activity in the upcoming first quarter of 2021. The projects cover a range of sectors, including data centers, distribution and warehousing, and automotive. Virginia, with more than $1.6 billion in planned project starts, leads in terms of project value.

As the world increasingly turns online for work, education and commerce, data centers are becoming big business, and in the Mid-Atlantic region, this is the top sector for Industrial Manufacturing project starts in terms of value, with Virginia leading the way. Among the projects planned for the state is PointOne Developments Limited's (Acheson, Alberta) Phase I construction of a data center campus in Remington. This is the first phase of a planned $1.5 billion, six-building campus and entails the construction of a 240,000- to 310,00-square-foot data hall with 46 megawatts (MW) of power to provide expanded data service operations to the region. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) is providing design-build services on the project, which is expected to be completed in summer of 2022. Also on the books for the state is Vantage Data Centers' (Santa Clara, California) Phase III construction at its data center campus in Ashburn, Virginia. The project entails constructing a two-story, approximately 253,000-square-foot building with 32 MW of power to provide data colocation services. Related to the construction of data centers are the projects from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Among the company's upcoming projects in the region is a planned grassroot import processing center in Chesapeake, Virginia. The facility is being built on a 74-acre section of a larger site and will include a 650,000-square-foot inbound cross-dock building with supporting equipment and systems to process bulk goods and break them into down into smaller orders. While the automotive sector in the Mid-Atlantic region isn't as large as that of the Great Lakes or U.S. Southeast region, there are a few projects planned to kick off in the upcoming quarter. AB Volvo (Gothenburg, Sweden) plans to upgrade its truck assembly plant in Dublin, Virginia, by installing several state-of-the-art dynamometers and upgrading paint operations, as well as improving overall material production flow. Arrival Limited (London, England) will renovate an existing 193,750-square-foot building in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to enable the company to produce 1,000 electric buses per year. As factories and other entities seek to be less reliant on the power grid and integrate renewable energy into their systems, microgrids and backup power are becoming increasingly prevalent. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Washington, D.C.) will establish solar arrays on some rail stations in D.C. and Maryland. The arrays will be built over car ports and parking garages at the stations and will be 1.8-1.9 MW each, featuring between approximately 2,800 and 4,000 SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California) solar modules.
