Among the largest projects planned to kick off in the region is BMW of North America Incorporated's (Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey) grassroot automotive engine and transmission manufacturing plant in Greer, South Carolina. The facility will be built on the grounds of BMW's existing automotive assembly plant. The project entails constructing an approximately 400,000-square-foot building to produce internal combustion engines, hybrid and fully electric drive trains, and motors for the North American market. Construction is set to begin soon, with completion in the first half of 2021. Gray Construction (Charlotte, North Carolina) is the general contractor on the project, which has an estimated total investment value of $300 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Virginia leads the region in project value because of a large number of planned data center projects. Among these is PointOne Developments Limited's (Acheson, Alberta) grassroot data center in Remington, about 50 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The first phase of construction involves building a 317,000-square-foot data hall with 46 megawatts of power. Phase II will be built in conjunction with Phase I and entails doubling square footage and power. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II.
As e-commerce grows, companies like Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) require more facilities, and Amazon is expanding its footprint in the region through the planned construction of a grassroot fulfillment center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, about 20 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. The 4 million-square-foot, five-story building will be built on a 79-acre site and will feature an 818,423-square-foot ground floor and 267 loading docks. The project is set to be completed in early 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the traditional manufacturing projects being tracked is Haakon Industries' (Cheney, Washington) grassroot refrigeration and heating equipment manufacturing plant in Asheville, North Carolina. The project includes constructing a 140,000-square-foot facility to manufacture HVAC systems. Construction is planned to begin by the end of the year and be completed in the summer of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Easley, South Carolina, KP Components Incorporated (Easley) plans to expand its metal components manufacturing facility by constructing a 50,000-square-foot plant to help support the company's increased U.S. market growth. Construction is planned to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Industrial Info also is tracking a few planned projects at the region's ports. Among these is the Maryland Port Administration's (Baltimore, Maryland) expansion of a berth at the Seagirt Marine Terminal in Baltimore. The project will deepen the container berth by 50 feet to allow for the handling of two supersize container ships simultaneously. Construction is scheduled to begin before the end of this year and be completed in first-quarter 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
