Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China produced 292 million tonnes of coal in September, a 7% reduction from the same month in 2013, according to the China National Coal Association (CNCA). State-owned mines produced 150 million tonnes, a drop of 11.9% from a year earlier.

China's coal output for January through September totaled 2.85 billion tonnes, a drop of 1.28% from the first three quarters of 2013. Output from state-owned mines totaled 1.48 billion tonnes, a drop of 2.6%, the CNCA said.

Inner Mongolia remained the largest coal producer in China, followed by Shanxi and Shaanxi. Coal output from Inner Mongolia totaled 740 million tonnes during the first three quarters of this year, a drop of 1.3% from the same period last year. Shanxi produced 714 million tonnes, an increase of 2.1%; Shaanxi's output reached 372 million tonnes, an increase of 4.3%.

China's September coal imports fell 17.8% to 21.16 million tonnes in comparison with the same month in 2013. The country imported 223 million tonnes during the first three quarters of this year, a drop of 6.7% from the same period in 2013. Starting this month, China has resumed 3% to 6% import duties on anthracite and coking coal. It is expected China will reduce its coal imports by 40 million tonnes for all of 2014.

Coal consumption in China has also continued to fall. China's coal sales dropped to 281 million tonnes in September, a 6.6% drop from September 2013. The amount of coal sold in China for the first three quarters of this year fell 1.14% to 2.73 billion tonnes.

Coal shipments via railway totaled 186 million tonnes in September, a drop of 4.3% from the same month last year.

For the first three quarters of this year, rail shipments rose 0.3% to 1.72 billion tonnes. Shipments on the Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway reached 340 million tonnes, an increase of 2.2%.

Due to the weak market demand, China's coal stockpiles have remained at more than 300 million tonnes for the past 34 months. As of the end of September, stockpiles maintained by coal producers reached 96 million tonnes, an increase of 9.8% over the same time last year. Stockpiles maintained by key power producers reached 86.52 million tonnes, an increase of 18.1%. Stockpiles in major ports increased 5.8% to 46.72 million tonnes.

Coal Industry profits have fallen in the past three months. More than 70% of the country's coal producers incurred deficits. Coal prices, however, have rebounded slightly since the first of September.
