Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The fourth unit of China Huadian Corporation's (Beijing) Shatuo Hydropower Station, the last project in the cascade development scheme of the Wujiang River, passed the 72-hour, continuous, full-load trial operation and was put into commercial operation on June 13, 2013. The project has achieved its objective to put all four units into operation in one year. Completion of the project also means the development of cascade hydropower projects in the Wujiang River has been fulfilled, according to an announcement from China Huadian Corporation on June 17.
The Shatuo Hydropower Station, located on the mainstream of Wujiang River in Yanhe County of Tongren City, in southwestern China's Guizhou province, is the last project in the nine-cascade development scheme planned for the main stream of Wujiang River in Guizhou province. The project has a total installed capacity of 1,120 megawatts (MW), with four vertical Francis hydraulic turbine generating units of 280 MW each.
Guizhou Wujiang Hydropower Development Company Limited (Wujiang Hydro) (Guiyang, Guizhou), a subsidiary of China Huadian Corporation, is responsible for the development and operation of the project. Pre-stage preparation of the project kicked off in May 2006. In December 2010, the project received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the top planner of China. Prior to the commissioning of the fourth unit, the three previous units were put into commercial operation on May 11, May 14 and May 26, 2013, respectively.
The Wujiang River, with a total length of 1,037 kilometers, is the largest tributary of the south bank in the upstream of the Changjiang River, and one of 13 large-scale hydropower bases in China. Upon the approval of the State Council, Wujiang Hydro was established to develop the cascade hydropower projects planned on the mainstream of the river in October 1992. After 21 years of effort, Wujiang Hydro completed the cascade development in the mainstream of Wujiang River. So far, its total installed capacity has risen from an initial 630 MW to 8,665 MW, and the number of operating hydro units has increased from three to 32.
