Sigma-Aldrich’s SAFC Group Completes $15 Million High Potency APIs CMO Expansion Project in Madison

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas): Construction is now complete on a production expansion project at the Madison, Wisconsin site of SAFC (Madison, Wisconsin), the custom chemical manufacturing division of Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (NASDAQ:SIAL) (Saint Louis, Missouri). The $15 million project added nearly 40,000 square-feet, which more than doubled the existing 23,500 square-foot plant. The investment was in response to the continued growing demand for custom chemical manufacturing capacity of high potency advanced pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which includes category III and IV compounds.

First reported in July 2004 and tracked by Industrial Info (reference: Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database), the project was originally planned by the site’s former owner’s Tetrionics, who had already retained Strang (Madison, Wisconsin) to design the expansion. When SAFC acquired the plant later that year they decided to proceed with the project, with Vogel Brothers (Madison, Wisconsin) serving as construction manager.

The SAFC site is equipped for the development and manufacturing of highly potent/cytotoxic APIs. It is one of a fairly limited number of premiere HPAPI contract manufacturing facilities in the world and is fully certified for compound handling. Services performed include those development projects that require chemistry that is difficult to handle because of its physical and biological properties or because the synthetic process is extremely long and complex requiring experienced personnel that understands the complexities associated with such processes.

The trend within the industry continues, one of deciding that rather than investing in-house, whether initially or long-term, to turn to other companies that offer state-of-the-art process and production technology, such as the SAFC plant. As a result, the contract manufacturing organization (CMO) segment as a whole continues to enjoy increasing demand.

Trends such as this and other factors that drive capital spending are found in the essential 2006 Pharmaceutical-Biotech Forecast, a wealth of important information gathered together into one vital reference point. Features include statistical analysis of project spending (updated quarterly), the industry's top earners, plant starts/closures and Industrialinfo.com's exclusive (covering plants that are operational as well as those in various stages of development).
