Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SYSCO Corporation (NYSE:SYY) (Houston, Texas), a leading distributor of food-service products, has begun to commission its new refrigerated food distribution center at the Pinto Realty's business park in Houston, Texas. The center is scheduled to begin operations early next year and is expected to generate about 700 jobs when fully operational. All activities from the east side of the town center will be relocated to the new facility.

Groundbreaking took place in spring 2008 at the 50-acre site and involved construction of a 585,000-square-foot building that will include refrigerated, frozen, and dry-food warehouse space. Also included in the $50 million project is the installation of a high-speed product retrieval system. Big-D Construction Incorporated (Salt Lake City, Utah) was retained by Sysco to provide design-build services, and Innovative Refrigeration System Incorporated (Lyndhurst, Virginia) was selected to install an ammonia refrigeration system.

Through subsidiary Sysco Food Services of Houston Incorporated (Houston), Sysco will distribute more than 12,000 food products to restaurants, hospitals and schools throughout Houston and Southeast Texas when the center becomes fully operational. Current Sysco's facility off Interstate 10 will be occupied by Houston Food Bank, which will help to increase food distribution to hungry people.

As part of its North American Food and Beverage Database, Industrial Info Resources (IIR) is currently tracking five other Sysco Corporation capital projects valued at $215 million.

Sysco Corporation is the largest food-service distributor in North America. It distributes food products, plus equipment and supplies, for the food-service and hospitality industries. As of June 2009, it operated 186 distribution facilities serving approximately 400,000 customers.
