Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) is on schedule and on budget for the completion of the $2.49 billion, 1,220-megawatt (MW) Watts Bar Nuclear Station Unit 2 in Spring City, Rhea County, Tennessee. Construction initially commenced in 1973 and was stopped in 1988 at 80% complete. While the project was on hold, some of the equipment was used for other units. In August 2007, the TVA board gave approval for construction to resume, and the project picked back up in October of that year.
Watts Bar Unit 2 is being constructed by engineering and construction company Bechtel Group Incorporated (San Francisco, California). Like its sister unit, Unit 2 utilizes a pressurized water reactor by Westinghouse Nuclear Services (Monroeville, Pennsylvania), a division of Toshiba Corporation (OTC:TOSBF) (Tokyo, Japan), that drives a steam turbine/generator by Siemens Power Generation (Orlando, Florida), a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany). The unit is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2012, bringing additional base-load power to the grid
