India Leads $173 Billion in Global Cement Manufacturing Project Development

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A tremendous growth in infrastructure and building construction in developing nations is greatly increasing demand for cement and has set off a record number of construction projects for cement-manufacturing plants worldwide. Industrial Info is tracking 2,365 cement-manufacturing plant construction and maintenance projects totaling $173 billion. Projects include grassroot cement-manufacturing plants and grinding units, rotary kiln additions, in-plant capacity expenditures, and maintenance shutdown projects.

China and India account for 64% of the market, or $111 billion.

India is the No. 1 country in the world for cement-manufacturing project development, with more than 660 projects totaling $77 billion. China, which produces about a third (2.1 billion tons in 2012, according to the USGS) of the world's cement, is No. 2, with about 600 projects totaling $34 billion.

In addition to India and China, the remaining top 10 countries for cement-manufacturing plant spending are Indonesia, Russia, Vietnam, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, the U.S. and South Africa.

An additional eight countries have more than $1 billion in active cement-manufacturing projects, including Canada, Ukraine, Nigeria, Turkey, Peru, Tajikistan, Peru, Myanmar and Uzbekistan.

Leading cement manufacturer Holcim (Switzerland) is developing a number of grassroot and expansion projects in countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, France, Philippines, Romania, Russia and Vietnam. In Romania, the company is evaluating a $531 billion grassroot cement plant. When approvals are secured, construction could begin in 2016.
