Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The World Bank (Washington D.C.) continues to support national development projects in Kenya. Through its global arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the bank said it will take a $20 million equity stake in the 100-megawatt (MW) Kipeto windfarm project in Kajiado County.
Kipeto will be the second-largest wind-power facility in Kenya, after the 310-MW windfarm now being set by Lake Turkana Wind Power in Marsabit, for which the African Development Bank (AfDB) was instrumental in arranging funding after the World Bank retreated from the project earlier this year.

The Kipeto windfarm will be developed on a site leased from local land owners in Kajiado County. GE (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) will install 47 1.6-100 turbines and 16 1.6-82.5 turbines. GE also will construct a new on-site substation and a 66-kilovolt (kV) line to transmit the generated power to the national grid.
"Power Kipeto will sell its power to the Kenyan off-taker KPLC under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA)," said IFC.
Total project costs are estimated at $316 million.
