                    Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderurgica do Atlantico (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) will inaugurate a 495-megawatt (MW) cogeneration power plant in Santa Cruz, 60 kilometers west of Rio de Janeiro, in March 2009. The power plant will generate 200 MW devoted to a joint-venture steel mill of ThyssenKrupp CSA and  Vale (NYSE:RIO)  (Rio de Janeiro). A further 290-MW of power will be supplied to the Brazilian national grid.
The combined-cycle power plant will be equipped with two 180-MW gas turbines, one 320-MW steam turbine and two heat-recovery steam generators. The mechanical components will be supplied by the French company Alstom (EPA:ALO) (Paris, France). In November 2006, ThyssenKrupp CSA awarded Alstom a $133 million contract including engineering, procurement and construction of the project, as well as operation and maintenance services.
The thermal power plant will be part of a steel mill complex, consisting of a steel mill, a thermal power plant and a port. The $4 billion project is strategically located in Sepetiba Bay. Construction of the complex started in September 2006 and is expected to be completed in March 2009. The steel mill will produce 5 million tons of steel per year, 60% of which will be exported to the North American market.
