Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Belchatow power station owned by the Polish holding BOT Gornictwo i Energetyka SA (BOT GiE) (Warsaw, Poland), currently equipped with 12,370-megawatt (MW) lignite-fired Zamech steam turbines coupled with 12 Rafako boilers, will commission its new 858-MW unit Belchatow II in 2010.
Belchatow, a 4,440-MW power station, located in the Kleszczow commune 180 kilometers southwest of Warsaw, started generating electricity for the grid in the early 1980s and supplies around 19% of the electricity for the Polish market. Considered one of world's biggest coal-fired stations, it will continue to expand its capacity with the construction of Belchatow II.
The construction of the new block began in October 2006 under an engineering, procurement and construction contract awarded to Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France) in 2004. The plant will be equipped with a five-casing STF100 steam turbine, a tower-type boiler and a Gigatop generator. Furthermore, it is expected to sustain Belchatow's electricity production once the decommissioning of its older Units 1 and 2 is achieved in 2016. At present, officials are performing the construction of the cooling tower. The building of the boiler is reaching its final stage.
The parent company BOT GiE is a power and mining holding established in 2004 and is the largest power provider in Poland. Through its subsidiaries, the company owns and operates three power plants with a total installed capacity of around 8,000 MW.
