Combustion Turbine at Ecuador's Gonzalo Zevallos Thermal Plant Offline for Two Years Now

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Since October 2006, Combustion Turbine 4 at the Ecuadorian Gonzalo Zevallos thermal power plant has been offline because of a failure in its generator rotor. Brush Electrical Machines (Leicestershire, United Kingdom) manufactured the unit's generator and was responsible for performing the repairs on the damaged rotor. Plant officials are currently installing the rotor and expect to resume the unit's operations by the end of the month.

The 28-megawatt (MW) turbine was manufactured by Pratt & Whitney (East Hartford, Connecticut), a division of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) (Hartford, Connecticut).

The 172-MW Gonzalo Zevallos Thermal Plant is owned and operated by Electroguayas S.A. (Guayaquil, Ecuador). The company also owns the 133-MW Trinitaria Thermal Plant and the 102-MW Enrique Garcia Thermal Plant, which has been offline since December 2007 because of a failure in the turbine's paddles. The spare parts for repairs are expected to arrive at the plant by the end of the year, and the turbine could restart by January 2009.
