Covanta Energy Developing 165 Megawatts of Waste-to-Energy Projects in Europe

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Covanta Energy (Kingswinford, England), a subsidiary of Covanta Holding Corporation (NYSE:CVA) (Fairfield, New Jersey), is involved with three new waste-to-energy projects worth approximately $1.18 billion for 165.5 megawatts (MW) that will burn more than 1.8 million tons per year of waste in northern Europe.

The project Covanta is furthest along with is the $303 million, 60-MW Dublin waste-to-energy cogeneration facility, which will burn 600,000 tons per year of waste. The facility is owned by Dublin Waste to Energy Limited (Dublin, Ireland), a 50:50 joint venture being developed with Dong Energy AS (Fredericia, Denmark). Covanta Engineering Europe will oversee construction of the plant. Construction is expected to commence this quarter with commercial operation to begin in the second quarter of 2012. The city of Dublin has been developing the project since the 1990s.

Covanta Energy is developing two U.K. projects: the $575 million, 70-MW, Merthyr Tydfil waste-to-energy plant in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, that will burn 750,000 tons per year of waste; and the $300 million, 35.5-MW Cheshire waste-to-energy facility in Middlewich, England, that will burn 370,000 tons per year of waste. The projects are about two years out to commence construction, with commercial operation set for 2014 or 2015.
