Sigma-Aldrich Plans Relocation For Fine Chemical Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Sigma-Aldrich (NYSE: SIAL) (Saint Louis, Missouri) plans to relocate its downtown Milwaukee plant to North Teutonia Avenue. The existing plant was purchased for $32.5 million by the state of Wisconsin to rebuild the Marquette Interchange, part of Milwaukee's freeway system. The company will invest over $52 million on the new plant, and of that amount, $17 million was money gained from the plant sale. Construction on this new plant could begin as early as September 2003.

Two new buildings will be constructed at this new location including a 140,000 square foot production, packaging and research facility plus a 30,000 square foot warehouse. An existing 55,000 square foot building will be renovated for an office complex. Preliminary design has begun and an engineering and construction firm should be selected early second quarter of this year.

The existing downtown plant will continue to operate through July 1, 2005 until this new location can be built. Wisconsin employs approximately 900 employees for Sigma-Aldrich and may move some plant functions to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and its Ohio locations.

Sigma-Aldrich is a manufacturer and supplier of biochemical and organic fine chemical products used in research, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical manufacturing. As a supplier of over 14,000 organic products, Sigma-Aldrich is continuing to add new products to this list every year.
